About Today Varah Jayanti
Varaha is holy appearance day of Lord Varahadev. It is celebrated on the twelfth day of waxing moon phase (dvadasi) of Magha month Varaha Jayanti falls on Today. Let us know more about Lord Varaha and celebrations of Varaha Jayanti.
Varaha Jayanti is celebrated with great devotion devotees of Lord Vishnu. On this day they observe fasting till noon and take up various devotional activities like deity worship and food offerings. They read Srimad Bhagavatam and recite strotams to glorify Lord Varaha. ‘Om Varaha Namaha’ mantra is chanted on this day. Charity on this day is considered very significant.

Lord Varaha is boar avatar of the Supreme Lord Sree Hari or Sree Vishnu. Varha avatar is the third incarnation of Lord Vishnu that took place millions of years ago. There were two twin demon kings by the name Hiranyaksha andHiranyakasipu. These demon brothers always took pleasure in troubling devatas and common people. To show up his power Hiranyaksha dragged Mother Earth to the bottom of the cosmos ocean. Seeing his atrocities Lord Brahma prayed to Lord Vishnu to rescue Bhoomidevi (Mother Earth) from the demon.
Lord Vishnu is protector or His devotees. He at once took the form of Varaha, the Divine Boar, with two tusks and four hands. He went inside the ocean and carried out the Earth. Egoistic Hirayaksha was outraged by knowing all this and went to fight with Lord Varaha. A great fight took place between the two and the demon Hiranyaksha was killed by Lord Varaha. Then he placed Bhoomidevi at the shore of the ocean and blessed Her to fit into the Divine order.
All demigods became jubilant on knowing this. They started showering flowers and glorifying Lord Varaha. From then Bhoomidevi became eligible variegated life. All auspiciousness prevailed from then and all demigods became peaceful.
There is further story to this legend when HIranyakashipu, the twin brother of Hiranyaksha, came to know about this and decided to take revenge from Vishnu. Then Lord Vishnu took Narsimha (Half-Man Half-Loin) incarnation to kill Hirayankashipu.
