About rainy season
Have you been through a rainy season in Jakarta? If so, you know the scenarios: flooded streets, traffic, honking horns, more traffic, leaking roofs, flooded houses and telephone and electricity outages. Not fun! So this year, be ready! Here are a few tips from the Colliers International on how to prepare your home for this rainy season.
Make sure that your gutters, roof and floor drains are free of debris. Ensure that they are cleaned on a weekly basis throughout the rainy season.
Inspect the roof for broken tiles or those that have shifted over the dry season. Repair if necessary.
Inspect your ceilings for signs of leaking, such as mold, water rings, or discoloration. Repair if necessary.
Check your windows and doors to make sure they close properly.
Prepare your emergency flood gear. You should have flashlights, spare batteries, extra bottled water, a 10X10 tarp and dry goods (food). Supermarket and traditional market supplies of fresh foods run out quickly when trucks are not able to travel freely through the city.
Purchase a floor water squeegee to move water toward the drains.
Check the street and community drains near your home to make sure they are clear from debris. Contact your neighborhood chief and/or landlord to request they be cleaned if they are not.
Become familiar with street logistics and where it commonly floods during the rainy season, so you can start planning alternate travel routes.
Ask expat friends how they have weathered previous inconveniences caused by the rainy season as seasoned veterans have lots of great tips to share.
Develop a repair plan to keep your home in tip-top shape!

You re hiking around on Hampsted Heath (a park near London) at the end of a long sunny day. You run across (separately) the ghosts of Sir Winston Churchill, Sir Baden Powell, and Sir Edmund Hillary, who all give you directions to the nearest tube stop. Whom don’t you believe? Your story teller, for there is no such thing as a completely sunny day in England.

A weather intern walks into a bar and asks for a Cold Draft. Suddenly the bar door swings open and gusty cool air fills up the bar. After drinking his Draft things seem to get back to normal. The guy then orders a Thunderclap on ice. Suddenly the roof gets pelted with hail stones and an intense lightning flash and thunderous explosion rock the bar. After drinking his Thunderclap things seem to once again get back to normal. Feeling rather good at this point he asks for a third drink- ordering a Tornado on the rocks. This time the bar is not only pelted with even larger hail stones but ferocious winds rip the door off its hinges, shake the bar violently and break every window. Feeling extra good and cocky at this point he then orders an extra large and extra strong Hurricane. The bartender after this request looks up at the guy perplexed and says, “Sorry fella, we have no Hurricanes in Kansas”.
