Camel Fair, Bikaner is a sought after event in Rajasthan. Organized by the Department of Tourism, Art and Culture, this is a much awaited event. It is celebrated in the month of January. The event mainly includes spectacular camel performances like camel dances, camel races, neck shaking camel rides etc.
This festival starts off with a magnificent procession of bedecked camels against the red sandstone backdrop of the Junagarh Fort (1588-1593) in the town.It is a colorful spectacle of beautifully decorated camels that fascinates the onlookers with their charm and grace.
The festivity advances to the open sand-spreads of thePolo Grounds, followed by camel races, camel milking, fur cutting design, the best breed competition, camel acrobatics, camel bands and so on.
A sight of unusual camel activities like camel races, camel dances, and the bumpy, neck shaking camel rideshighly fascinates the viewers. The camels display amazing footwork, dancing gracefully to the slightest direction of their riders.
Their displays and competitions accompany the color, music and rhythm unique to a fair in Rajasthan. Thejubilant skirt swirling dancers, the awe-inspiring fire dance and the dazzling fireworks light up the fortified Desert City. The festivities reach to the peak with a different tenor as the renowned artists display a medley of folk dances and songs. Finally, the festival concludes on a fine note by magnificent display of sparkling fireworks which illuminates the desert city of Bikaner.

Thecamel Fair Festival starts with a procession of heavily decorated and bejeweled camels swaying regally against the background of red sandstone of the Junagarh Fort. During the parade one can see these creatures decked up in all the finery one can imagine. Tinkling anklets, elaborately decorated necks, and colorful ornamental bridles adorn these graceful animals as the sway with the elegance and poise of models. In fact that’s exactly what they are – desert models walking down the ramp of desert sands!
Gradually the scope of celebration increases and spreads onto the vaster sands of the huge ground. The festival is marked by numerous contests and performances between and by the camels themselves. These includes camel dances, tug-of-war, acrobatics and races. Apart from this there are competitions that judge entries in categories like ‘Best Dressed Camel’, “Camel with the best hair-cut’, ‘Best breed’ etc. One of the most entertaining and interesting events is the camel-milking session which demonstrates the fine art this seemingly simple activity actually requires. As experts milk the animals one can only watch in wonder and learn that even the apparently easiest things have a definite method involved in making them successful.

The Bikaner Camel Fair commences with a procession of camels. The first day of the event starts with a camel pageant. Camels decorated with jewelry are showcased during the pageant show. It is followed by camel dance performances. These dance performances are unique to witness as the camels display excellent footwork in accordance to the direction of the drivers. During the festival, visitors can also have a taste of the tea and sweets made of camel milk.
The prime attraction of the second day is the camel race. It is an exciting experience to witness large number of camels running to get the numero uno position. Large numbers of tourists as well as locals gather at the venue to catch the excitement of the event.
Each day of the event is also marked by absorbing dance performances by the folk artists. The costume of these dancers reveals a lot about the rich culture of the place. A grand display of fireworks marks the end of the event. The grand finale provides an appropriate end to the grand festival.
