Sree Narayana Guru was one of the greatest, saint, prophet and social reformers of Kerala. Being born in a socially backward family, he faced numerous social injustices in his life. He was a victim of the caste ridden Hindu society of India, especially in Kerala. Thus he decided to undertake a reform movement to cleanse the Indian society of its evils like the caste system and other forms of social discrimination. He wanted to imbibe new values of social equality, spirituality and social freedom among his followers to create a just society based on equality and respect of each other. His followers used to call him Gurudevan and he was very popular and respected among them. He was well versed in the Vedas, was very poetic, believer of non violence and very humble and polite. He respected the views of others but did not hesitate to state what was right and what was wrong. He was very courageous and was determined to get the Hindu society rid of its social wrongs. For his great and impressive work he is regarded as one of the greatest social reformers of Kerala and the whole of India. The Samadhi of this great saint is located at Sivagiri Mutt in Varkala, which is located at a distance of 51 kms from the capital city of Kerala, Thiruvananthapuram. The Sree Narayana Guru Samadhi is regarded as one of the most sacred places in Kerala and every year thousands of pilgrims come here to pay their homage to this great saint reformer. Nearby the Samadhi lies the temple of Lord Janardhana or Vishnu which is more than 2000 years old and also a beautiful beach known as the Papanasham Beach. It is believed that the beach has healing properties and can help people wash away their sins. Hence people come here to take a dip in the holy waters and also to immerse the ashes of the dead.
