Monday Vrat Katha

This story is about a poor Brahman who was too poor to sustain his family. He used to stay at home only, and so his wife one day asked him to go out and earn so that they could have food on time. After listening to his wife, the Brahman along with his brass pot and a string went out to earn so as to feed his family.
Upon starting his journey, he came by a Peepal tree that was along a steep path. Under the peepal tree he made a platform for himself and sat there, where he meditated for about twelve years. People who were passing by often offered him food.
Lord Shiva was so pleased with his prayers and fasts that he himself came to him, not as a Lord but as a Swami with a dandi in his hand. The swami blessed him while he was meditating and then asked the Braham to ask for anything from him. The Brahman happily asked for money to keep his family happy. But as money was just a worldly possession and is temporary, he gave the brahman a mantra.
The mantra was “Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, all are related with one or the other deity”. Lord Shiva is the deity of Monday. Now, whosoever knows this secret will get all the nine treasures of Kubera, the Lord of Wealth along with prosperity and wealth.
After listening to the mantra, the old Brahman happily rushed to her sister’s house. The sister felt pleasant to see her brother after a long time. The old Brahman sat down with her and talked with her about his family matters. But his sister denied to sit with him, as she was not having enough time to spare.
She wanted to cook food for her brother but the Brahman told her to first plaster his house with cow dung and light a holy lamp. The Brahman told her to invite her neighbors also after which he would tell her a useful mantra.
The old lady instantly went out to call her neighbors. Soon a crowd gathered outside her place to listen the useful mantra by the Brahman. The old Brahman said, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday are related with one or other deities. Lord Shiva is the deity of Monday. Whosoever knows this secret gets nine treasures of Lord Kubera, the lord of wealth, as also all Riddhis and Siddhis.
This was the first time when the Brahman had tested the mantra and as a surprise to everyone, as soon as the mantra was used, the Brahmans sister house got filled up with a numerous household articles and enormous wealth. The old lady got happy and offered his brother with food. The brother denied to it and wanted to have food at his home only. Now on his way back to home he saw one of his Baniya friend. The Brahman repeated the same mantra there and instantly his friends house also got filled with wealth.
His wife was happy to see him after a long duration of twelve years but was surprised also as the Brahman was empty handed. The Brahman replied that he has learnt a mantra from a Swami and the mantra was much powerful and useful than the wealth. His wife got angry after listening this statement but as soon as the Brahman repeated the mantra, with the grace of Lord Shiva, his house was filled with all the enormous things and wealth.
Now the wife thought of what to do with all these things? The Brahman thought of using this wealth for the welfare of other poor people and then they all started helping the needy people by serving water to thirsty, helping the unmarried girls in their marriage and then they lived happily ever after.

Somvar Ki Katha-2

This story is related to the people fasting on Monday. Monday is dedicated to Lord Shiva. So people fasting on Monday should listen to this story in the afternoon and then offer prayers to Lord Shiva. During the fasting day, meals are taken only once and generally during the afternoon. Successful completion of the fast brings prosperity in your house.
This story is about a wealthy merchant who had lots of wealth and prosperity but still he was not happy and remained sad as he didn’t had any son. To have a son, the merchant used to fast on Mondays and also offer prayers to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati with full faith. At last Goddess Parvati was pleased with him.
One day the Goddess indicated about the faith of the merchant, which he had in Lord Shiva. Goddess Parvati wanted Lord Shiva to fulfill all his dreams and desires. After listening to the Goddess, Lord Shiva decided to fulfill his desire of a son but with a condition. The condition was that the merchant’s son will then live for only Twelve years. Fortunately, this wealthy merchant could hear their conversation. The time passed by and one day the merchant’s wife gave birth to a son. The merchant was so happy and so he celebrated the birth of his son by distributing food, clothes and money among the poor. Everyone prayed for the long life of his son.
He did everything to be happy but still he wasn’t happy because he knew that his son would not live beyond twelve years of age. He knew about the current situation and then he started with his Monday fasts and that too with a greater zest. Now he used to worship Lord Shiva more than anything else.
When the merchants son was eleven years old, he used to look very smart. Along with her mother everyone wanted him to marry to a beautiful girl. She insisted for it again and again but the merchant never agreed for his marriage. She sent her son to Kashiji along with his brother-in-law. She told him to take enough money from her and arrange for the best spiritual knowledge in kashiji. She also told him to arrange for some devotional gatherings and to distribute alms among the beggars. Now the merchant’s son started off with the journey along with his son. On their way, they arranged for devotional gatherings and also distributed food and clothes to the needy.
One day they paused their journey at a capital of a king. The king’s daughter was to get married on the same day and the marriage party had reached the city. When the king saw that the bridegroom was blind from one eye, he decided to replace him with a beautiful boy. When the people of the king were searching for a beautiful boy, they found the merchants son who was with his maternal uncle. The bridegroom’s father wanted the merchant’s son to go for the marriage as his prestige was on the stake. He wanted the merchant’s son to have a temporary marriage with the king’s daughter and for that he would give him lots of wealth. He told him that right after the marriage ceremony, the merchants son would be set free.
Finally the merchant’s son got convinced for a temporary marriage. People praised at the luck of the smart and handsome bridegroom after looking at him along with the bands.
The merchant’s son and the king’s daughter were married around the holy fire and after the ceremony was over, he told about the truth to his wife by writing everything on her scarf. The bride noticed something written on her scarf but due to the heavy crowd the bride could not read it at that time.
The bride read the message at the time of departure of the party and was shocked to know the reality. After knowing the reality she didn’t wanted to accompany with the one eyed bridegroom and so the party returned without a bride.
Soon the merchant’s son reached Kasiji where he devoted himself to the spiritual studies and also donated wealth to the poor. It was the last day of the twelveth year and his maternal uncle was doing his normal religious rites but suddenly the merchant’s son felt some pain in his chest. When his maternal uncle came inside the room, he found the boy dead. He was full of grief but kept silent as the Brahmans would not accept food from such a house. With courage, he completed his routine.
After completing his daily routine he started to cry. Many people nearby shared his grief with him. When Goddess Parvati heard all the cries and beating of the breast, the inside mother in the Goddess got aroused. The Goddess wanted Lord Shiva to order Yama to return the boy’s life as Yama was always at the command of Lord Shiva.
Lord Shiva agreed and sprayed some Ganga water on the dead body. The boy suddenly got up as he was just awake after a sleep. The spiritual education of the son was also over till now and so they started off with their journey back to home. Now they were back in the city where the boy got married. The king immediately recognized him and took him to his palace. The king now arranged for the departure of his daughter and also gave him adequate dowry.
The merchant’s son reached his city along with his bride. The merchant was sitting on the roof and after looking at both of them the merchant could not believed what he was watching. The merchant had decided to commit suicide by jumping off the roof if his son didn’t come.
So the merchant’s son along with his bride went up to the roof and touched their feet. The merchant and his wife were very happy to see the couple and then they lived happily ever after

 Somvar Ki Katha-3

This story is related to the Monday fast. People who worship Lord Shiva and fast on Monday get prosperity in their life and those who do not believe in all this will have to suffer some day. If a family prays to Lord Shiva with full belief then they are bound to lead a happy life. People should not think of any evil on the day of fast and try to help the needy in some way or the other. Regular belief and fasting on Monday will bring you more close to Lord Shiva and so to wealth and prosperity.
One day Lord Shiva decided to visit the city of Amrapali along with his wife Goddess Parvati. On their way they rested for some time in a beautiful Shiva temple. Once when they were in a good mood, they decided to play a dice game. While the game was going on, the priest of the temple came there. Goddess Parvati wanted the priest to guess the winner of the game.
Without even thinking for a bit, the priest named Lord Shiva and just then Goddess Parvati won the game but she was annoyed with the priest. She even shouted at the priest that he was a liar. She even cursed the Brahman that he be a leper.
After then the Brahman became a leper and spent a miserable life. After a few days, a few fairies came to the temple and saw the priest’s miserable condition. On asking about his condition, the priest narrated the whole story to the fairies. One of the fairies told him to start with the Monday fasts for regular sixteen weeks and on the seventeenth Monday prepare some prasad with ghee. She told him to distribute the prasad among his family members and take some himself. After then he’ll be free from this leprosy.
The priest followed the instructions and soon he became normal. One day Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati again visited the same temple and were surprised to see the priest’s health. The priest then narrated the whole story to them.
Listening to the story, Parvati also thought of keeping Monday fasts for sixteen weeks. Accidentally on the seventeenth Monday when she broke her fast, her beloved son Kartikeya, who was displeased with her, appeared and said, 0 dear mothers what is that power with which you have called me? What is the mystery?
Parvati told about the fasts to his son and now his son also wanted to keep these fasts for sixteen weeks for his friend who was very curious to get married.
On the seventeenth Monday, his friend went to a city. The ruler of the city decided to marry his daughter to a person on whose neck his well-decorated elephant would put the garland. Incidentally, the elephant garlanded him. The ruler of the city gave him his daughter along with a lot of money.
Both of them came back home, and when the bride asked about the success of his husband he told about the fasts that he kept for sixteen weeks and that only due to the blessings of Lord Shiva he got such a beautiful wife. Now her wife decided to keep these fasts for sixteen weeks for a son who will be full of knowledge. Her devotion to Lord Shiva succeeded and soon she gave birth to a son. As the son grew up he wanted to know the reason behind his knowledge. On asking about it, his mother revealed the story to the son.
Now the son started with the sixteen Monday fasts to get a kingdom for his parents. After some time, an old kings message came by that they were searching for a beautiful boy to marry the princess. He was married to the princess but after some time the king died and so the boy became the king.
On his seventeenth Monday, the boy arranged a large party at temple. The king wanted the queen to come along with him for breaking the fast but the queen refused to go with the king. So the king had to go alone. As the king was moving alone, a voice echoed which told him to carry the queen along with him or he will be destroyed.
The king returned to his palace and told about the oracle to everyone. The queen ultimately turned out. She left the palace bare footed. She was even thirsty and feeling low when she met an old lady who carried a load of spindles on her head. She felt pity on her and took some load from her. Suddenly strong wind blew and the spindles disappeared in the dusty wind. The queen felt sorry but the old lady just wanted her to leave.
The queen wanted a shelter and so went to an oilman’s house. As she stepped in his house, all the oil pots cracked and the oil began to flow. So the oilman immediately turned her out from his house.
The queen now went to a river to quench her thirst but as she touched the water the river dried up. She also went to a jungle where she saw a tank of water but as she touched the water, it became muddy. She couldn’t do anything but putting a few drops of muddy water in her mouth.
She was so tired that she wanted to have some rest but as she sat under the tree, all its leaves began to fall and it became leafless. The priest from a nearby temple called her. He provided her with all the facilities but after a few days he also fed up with the woman because whatever the woman touched became impure.
Now the priest wanted to know the story from the lady itself. The woman told the story to the priest and that she even rejected the proposal to attend a fast prayer. The priest now knew the reason. So he told the lady to keep fasts for sixteen weeks and then she’ll be alright.
The woman realized of her mistake and on her seventeenth Monday and on that day the king sent his soldiers to look for the queen in the city. The soldiers went to the temple but the priest refused to hand over the lady to the soldiers and told them to bring the king with them.
The king was happy to know about the queen and so went to the temple where he admitted that he deserted the queen to avoid Lord Shivas wrath. The queen was taken back to the palace and was given a royal welcome. After then they lived happily ever after. Since then it is believed that a person who fasts on sixteen Mondays, gets all pleasures and enters Shivapuri after his death.
