World Diabetes Day, on the 14th November every year, has grown from humble beginnings to become a globally-celebrated event to increase awareness about diabetes.
Comprising hundreds of campaigns, activities, screenings, lecture, meetings and more, World Diabetes Day is proving internationally effective in spreading the message about diabetes.WHO estimates that more than 346 million people worldwide have diabetes. This number is likely to more than double by 2030 without intervention. Almost 80% of diabetes deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries.
2012 is a milestone year as it’s the 91th anniversary of the discovery of insulin. Canada is proud to have given the gift of insulin to the world, and World Diabetes Day is an opportunity for Canadians to come together and celebrate the incredible made-in-Canada diabetes innovations.
Together, the Canadian Diabetes Association, JDRF, founding sponsor Novo Nordisk Canada Inc. and silver sponsor Eli Lilly Canada are marking the day by honouring and celebrating Diabetes Champions, like Banting, Best, Macleod and Collip.
