Pateti(Parsi New Year)2012 Coming Date

Pateti Festival is Coming to 18  August 2012.This Festival is Day of Parsi New Year.

Pateti(Parsi New Year)2012 Celebration

Pateti is the Parsis New Year Day. The last day of the previous year is the time to close off all accounts for that year. The significance of this day is that it is the time to consider the wrongs and sins of the previous year and atone for them. Navroj is the first day of the first month of the Zoroastrian year.
Struggle for good against Evil With Humata (good thoughts), Hukta (good words) and Havarshta (good deeds). Thus spoke Zoroaster, the great prophet of Iran to his followers who in India are known by the name of Parsi.
The older sect of Parsis celebrates the first day of the month of Farvardm as their New Year. On this day the Parsis review their actions in the past year, make resolutions for the new year, recite Patet or the prayer of repentance, hence the name Pateti, and promise to live in the righteous manner prescribed by their religious teaching.
In India’s multicultural society the Parsis have a significant position. They have lived in India for centuries. On Pateti day they visit their temple called the AGIARY. In the Agiary is kept the sacred fire which was brought from Persia when they first came to India and is always kept burning by their high priest. They worship Ahura Mazda, symbolized by fire. They renew their promise to have good thoughts, use good words and perform right actions. These are the three tenets of their religion. The word “PATETI’ comes from PATET which means repentance.
Parsis wear their “kushti” or sacred vest. The men wear their tradtional dress called ‘dagli’ while the women dress in their traditional ‘Gara’ sarees. A ‘Jashan’ (worship) is performed and sandalwood is offered to the fire.
As for most festivals, cleaning the house is important. Chowk Chandan, which is rangoli stamped out of tin molds decorates the steps and threshold of the house. Guests are greeted at he gateway with a garland. A tilak is placed on the forehead of the children, new clothes are worn and elaborate menus prepared. After the Jashan, ( thanksgiving prayers) in he temple the rest of the day is spent in meetng and visiting with friends and family. The traditional greeting is “Sal Mubarak” (Happy New Year).

Throughout the day on this festival of Navroz, there is much visiting of friends and relatives. Every visitor is offered some sweet and a glass of “faluda” – a sweet and chilled vermicelli and flavoured with rose essence. In all Parsi homes a silver tray is kept ready with roses, coconuts and kumkum for `tilak’. Rose water is freely sprayed on every visitor as he enters. By this time the artistic and colored designs on the doorsteps are smudged and messy but no one pays attention in the hilarious mood of the festival.
Although quite westernised in their life styles, Parsis are traditionally rigid in thoughts. So they observe all the rituals, prayers and modes of greetings as laid down in their religion for celebrating NAVROZ which is their New year.
Many of the rituals, prayers, greetings, exchangings, gifts, decorating and beautifying the houses are common to all the Indian festivals. But what is of paramount importance in the case of Parsi festivals is the free mixing of men and women which certainly is a sign of equality.
TThese Parsi festivals are also significant especially in to-day’s world when so much is being talked about class and caste differences. On the occasion of these Parsi festivals people from all the classes come together, ignoring social differences to rejoice whole-heartedly and celebrate the festive occasion in friendship, harmony and happiness.
Pateti is celebrated six days before Khordad Sal, or the birthday of the prophet Zoroaster.
