The old town of Cracow is not short of the odd legend or two from maiden-chomping dragons, enchanted pigeons to sorcerers who fly about on giant cockerels, but the Lajkonik Festival is one of the most peculiar of them.
Central to this quirky Polish custom is a strange looking hobby horse rider with a wizard’s hat, oriental clothes and Rasputin-like beard who prances onto the Market Square to meet the Mayor, rapping people with his mace as he goes.
The rider and his eccentric band of musicians take ‘ransoms’ from shopkeepers – usually alcohol and food shops and so can end up quite sloshed by the time he meets the Mayor!
